Dr. Peter Bray
Breast Reduction Surgery is also called reduction mammaplasty, it is a procedure used to remove excess fat, tissue and skin from the breasts. If you have large breasts, you might consider Breast Reduction Surgery to reduce discomfort and make the breasts proportionate to your body.
Breast Reduction Surgery can also improve your self esteem and ability to be more physically active.
If you are considering Breast Reduction Surgery, do your research and book a consultation with a well reviewed and respected Plastic Surgeon. It is important to understand what to expect during Breast Reduction Surgery, to make sure your expectations are realistic and you understand the risks.
Why Do It?
Breast Reduction Surgery is intended for women with large breasts- to eliminate the potentially associated health problems:
- Neck, shoulder and back problems.
2. Rashes and irritated skin under the breasts.
3. Nerve damage.
4. Restricted mobility.
5. Poor self esteem that can be associated with very large breasts.
6. Difficulty fitting into bras and other clothing.
Breast Reduction Surgery is not recommended in the following cases:
If you smoke.
Have health conditions, for example, diabetes or heart issues.
Are overweight.
Need to avoid scarring on your breasts.
You can have Breast Reduction Surgery at any age-including as a teenager. However, if the breasts have not finished growing you may require breast revision surgery in the future.
You should wait to get Breast Reduction Surgery in the following cases:
Pregnancy: If you are planning on having a family or haven’t finished having children. Breast volume can rapidly change during and after pregnancy. Breastfeeding can also be impeded by Breast Reduction Surgery, although there are medical procedures to alleviate this problem.
Weight reduction: If you are actively trying to lose weight and improve your body through exercise and healthy eating- you are best to wait until you have achieved your optimum weight and shape before Breast Reduction Surgery.
How to prepare.
Your Surgeon should always:
- Assess your medical history, general health and wellbeing.
2. Talk about your expectations regarding breast size and shape after the procedure.
3. Give an in-depth and honest explanation of the procedure and the associated pros and cons- including the possibility of scarring and loss of sensation in the breasts.
4. Look at and measure your breasts.
5. Take photos of your breasts for your medical records.
6. Explain the type of anesthesia to be used and any associated risks.
Before your Breast Reduction Surgery, you will:
Complete different lab tests.
Get a standard mammogram.
Quit smoking for a specific timeframe.
Abstain from taking headache medicine, anti-inflammatories and any other supplements.
Ask your Surgeon whether you will be returning home the day of your surgery or if you will have to stay overnight in the clinic or recovery suite.
What you can expect.
Breast Reduction Surgery is typically done under general anesthesia, either in a clinic or outpatient facility.
How it’s done:
An entry point around each areola is made and down each breast.
Liposuction is used to remove excess fat, tissue and skin.
Your Surgeon will reshape the breast and repositions the areola.
The areola typically stays attached to the breast, but it is possible that it will be removed and re-attached at a higher position if the breasts are very large.
Your Surgeon will aim to achieve symmetry of your breasts, however there is a chance of variation in size and shape. The size of your areola may shrink and you will have entry point scars that may fade over time but never totally vanish.
Following the medical procedure:
Your breasts will be secured with a cloth dressing or wraps.
A drain may be put under each arm to catch excess blood and other liquids.
You will be given antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs to lessen your chance of infection and complications.
Recovery:
Your breasts will likely feel sensitive.
Your breasts may be swollen.
Your Surgeon may prescribe a compression bra to hold your breasts in place while healing.
You will have to restrict physical activity for at least two weeks to a month while the breasts heal.
Your Surgeon may suggest avoiding underwire bras for about two months after the procedure.
Scarring will diminish over time but never completely vanish. You will require a follow-up visit with your Surgeon to remove bandages, drains and to evaluate your recuperation.
Results
Breast Reduction Surgery can eliminate pain in your upper back, neck and shoulders. It can increase your ability to participate in physical activity and boost your self esteem and body image.
Your results will be immediate, swelling can take some time to come down and you must be careful to follow your Surgeons directions carefully to decrease the possibility of excessive scarring. The results are typically very long-lasting, however breast shape and size can change with age, rapid weight gain and injury.
