Every year Cosmetic Plastic Surgery procedures are on the rise and Breast Enhancement is by far the most popular procedure. In the USA during 2017 there were over 300,000 Breast Augmentations and more than 100,000 Breast Lifts performed.
1. What is Breast Augmentation?
Breast Augmentation enhances the size and shape of a woman’s breasts. This is usually done with Breast Implants.
There are many reasons for a Breast Augmentation including; misshapen breasts, loss of breast size due to weight loss or pregnancy, or to improve breast shape and volume and create better symmetry of the body.
2. Which type of Breast Implants are available?
Breast Implants are made of a soft silicone shell filled with silicone gel or saline (salt water). The decision on which implant to use will be made by your Cosmetic Surgeon and reflect your aesthetic goals and preference.
Implants come in many different shapes and sizes. Round implants are popular and are usually chosen by women who want a substantial lift, more cleavage and fullness, teardrop-shaped implants can give a more natural look.
3. How are Breast Implants different?
Saline Implants are soft silicone shells filled with sterile salt water (saline).
Silicone Implants are filled with a safe medical-grade gel that is intended to create a more natural feel and look, particularly in thinner women.
4. What to expect during the procedure?
The surgery is performed with either general anesthesia or conscious sedation, the patient is either asleep or comfortably sedated for the procedure.
During surgery, the surgeon uses small incisions to create a pocket to make room for the implant. Once the implant is positioned, the incisions will be closed and bandaged. The procedure usually lasts two hours or less and patients can go home soon afterward.
5. How long will the recovery take?
On average, full recovery ranges from 4–6 weeks. Most patients feel substantially improved within 1 week of surgery. Doctors generally recommend light activity and no strenuous exercise until a patient is fully recovered.
Life after breast augmentation
The results of Breast Augmentation are long-lasting. Breast Implants last up to 10 years. Patients often elect to undergo 2nd or even 3rd “revision” procedures as they age naturally, to maintain their youthful profile.
Patients agree Breast Augmentation is a great confidence booster. Asking questions and doing research before your procedure will keep your expectations realistic and help you reach your aesthetic goals.
