Cosmetic Surgery vs Plastic Surgery- What’s the Difference?
If you mistakenly think Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery are the same thing, you aren’t the only one. Many Plastic Surgeon’s focus their practise around Cosmetic Surgery and the term is often used interchangeably. In any case it is incorrect to assume they are the same thing. While closely related Cosmetic Surgery and Plastic Surgery are not the same.
Cosmetic Surgery and Plastic Surgery Have Different Goals
While both Cosmetic Surgery and Plastic Surgery make improvements to a patient’s body, the methods of doing so are different and unique.
Cosmetic Surgery focuses on enhancing the patient appearance.
This system is unique as it focuses on improving the patient’s aesthetic appearance. Improved shape, tone and symmetry are the goals of Cosmetic Surgery. Cosmetic Surgery can be performed on all regions of the body, the head, neck and everywhere else. Since this is aesthetic work, Cosmetic Surgery is elective. Cosmetic Surgery can be performed by Surgeons from many different fields and specialities, including Plastic Surgeons.
Cosmetic Surgery may include:
- Breast Enhancement: Augmentation, Lift, Reduction
2. Facial Contouring: Rhinoplasty, Chin, or Cheek Enhancement
3. Facial Rejuvenation: Facelift, Eyelid Lift, Neck Lift, Brow Lift
4. Body Contouring: Tummy Tuck, Liposuction, Gynecomastia Treatment
5. Skin Rejuvenation: Laser Resurfacing, Botox, Filler Treatments
Plastic Surgery focuses on repairing defects- to reconstruct function and appearance.
Plastic Surgery is devoted to reconstructing areas of the face and body, fixing problems caused by birth defects, injury, accident or illness. Plastic Surgery is reconstructive in nature, and while many Plastic Surgeons are well trained in Cosmetic Surgery, the basis of their training is more specialized and involved. Plastic Surgery was often referred to as Reconstructive Surgery and is indeed one in the same.
Plastic Surgery Procedures:
- Breast Reconstruction
2. Burn Repair
3. Congenital Defects: Cleft Palate, Extremity Defects
4. Lower Extremity Reconstruction
5. Hand Surgery
6. Scar Revision Surgery
It is important to understand, Cosmetic Surgery training is obtained separately from Plastic Surgery training. Both practises have their own unique training and accreditation, a board certified practitioner of each will appear unique in regards to their qualifications.
Since technically any licensed Physician can perform Cosmetic Surgery it is important to do your research thoroughly- it is important to consider where your specialist did their residency and post-residency training, to see their level of competency and that they have demonstrated good capabilities in the particular Cosmetic Surgery procedures you are requesting.
