Creating The Perfect Jawline

Creating The Perfect Jawline

Dr. Peter Bray
Throughout history a sharp jaw has been associated with character, strength and youthfulness. At any age a solid jaw is the sign of vitality and confidence.
In spite of a healthy and active lifestyle you may experience sagging facial skin and the drooping features associated with aging. Not to worry there are both surgical and non-surgical options to correct this situation.

Nonsurgical alternatives

Nonsurgical options are best for patients who have a strong jawline by nature and only mild sagging around this area. Some good options include dermal fillers, neurotoxins, fat dissolving injectables and surgical threading.

Dermal fillers

By injecting dermal fillers to improve your facial structure, this can create a “hard edge” to the jaw and improve your overall appearance. This works best with patients who already have a stronger jaw but not the hard, bony edge that they desire.
Normally you will require 1–4 syringes of dermal fillers, depending on your existing facial structure and what you hope to achieve. The results are immediate and should last around 1 year+ depending on the type of filler used.

Neurotoxins

Botox or any similar neurotoxins can be injected into the masseter muscles of the face, which will help slim and create a more “V” shape to the face.
Relaxing the masseter muscles requires a larger amount of neurotoxins (Botox) and typically lasts 3–4 months.

Kybella to remove neck and jawline fat (not available in Canada)

Mild neck and jawline fat can be dissolves with Kybella (deoxycholic acid). Kybella for neck fat reduction is common, jawline injections require more volume of product and is considered “off brand” use. The results should be permanent- the fat is physically melted away, assuming the patient can maintain a stable weight.

Surgical Threads

Surgical threading can be used in your cheeks to lift sagging skin. The number of threads you may need will depend on the volume of your cheeks and how much loose skin is present. Surgical threads typically last 6 months to a year.

Surgical Options

Surgical options are appropriate for patients with more facial fat and increased sagging around the neck and jawline. The most common procedures are Liposuction or a Neck Life or a combination of both. Radiofrequency is another complimentary option to consider.

Neck liposuction

If you have abundant fat underneath the skin but not underneath your neck muscles, Liposuction of the neck and jawline is a great way to remove this fat and restore a youthful appearance. Depending on the amount of fat to be removed, you may need a skin-tightening procedure as well (Radiofrequency or RF). Results should last a lifetime because the fat is physically removed.

Neck lift

In this case, your Surgeon will make small incisions behind the ear and underneath the jaw, the neck skin is physically lifted giving access to the neck muscles, these are fixed to give greater support to the neck. A Neck Lift gives the most dramatic and long last results, as issues with the skin, fat, muscle and organs can be addressed directly for a complete and permanent result.

Radiofrequency

Radiofrequency energy can be used to tighten loose skin after procedures such as Neck Liposuction. RF can be used in different ways to improve this area, fix and firm neck skin. Redraped skin is made smooth and tight over the jawline with RF.

It is recommended that you consider your needs at home and then meet with a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon to discuss your best options.
