Vaginoplasty is a technique used to rejuvenate the vagina. There are different options, including a noninvasive procedure which helps refresh the vagina by warming and tightening the associated tissues using Radiofrequency (RF) waves or lasers. Patients with more vaginal laxity may not benefit from this technique and are better candidates for a surgical Vaginoplasty.
Reasons patients may need a Vaginoplasty:
After giving birth many women notice increased laxity of the vagina tissues, a result of the passage of the baby and associated stretching and tearing during labour and delivery. This can cause some problems after giving birth, some of which may include; the inability to effectively use tampons and decreased pleasure during sexual intercourse.
What does a Vaginoplasty achieve?
A Vaginoplasty will tighten and improve the muscles that have become damaged and remove any additional mucosal skin at the back of the vagina. The outer skin of the vagina can also be reshaped giving it a more aesthetic appearance.
Anesthesia for a Vaginoplasty
While a Vaginoplasty can be done under a local anesthetic, some patients feel more comfortable to have this procedure performed under general anesthesia.
Getting ready for a Vaginoplasty
Patients are required to do a bowel prep prior to surgery. This will be further explained by your Plastic Surgeon.
Vaginoplasty Technique
When the amount of skin to be removed is decided, a pie-shaped wedge is inserted inside the vagina to indicate which skin is to be removed from inside the vagina. Beneath this skin, strong sutures are used to fix the tissues firmly in place. Once the vaginal canal has been tightened, the mucosal skin is closed with sutures. In the event that additional skin protrudes from the area, this skin can be shaped to give a more pleasing appearance.
Vaginoplasty Recovery
Most patients may experience one to fourteen days of downtime. They may also feel a strong throbbing sensation inside the vagina for the first few days post-surgery. There should be absolutely no tampon use or sexual intercourse for about two months post surgery. In addition, depending on the degree of tightening to be done, some patients may be instructed to use dilators during the healing process.
What are the results of a Vaginoplasty?
This low risk technique results in a tighter vaginal canal and can greatly improve the aesthetics of the vagina while offering greater sexual pleasure.
