The Eyelid Aging Process

As skin ages it loses its elasticity. A loss of elasticity in addition to the effects of gravity causes skin to gather on the upper and lower eyelids.

Excess skin on the lower eyelid causes wrinkles and lumps. On the upper eyelids, additional skin can hang over the eyelashes and impede seeing.

Who Is a Good Candidate For Eyelid Surgery?

The best patient for an Eye Lift are individuals who are healthy and have reasonable expectations. Most are 35 years or older, however loose or saggy eyelids can be genetic and you may choose to have this procedure done sooner.

Eyelid Surgery or Blepharoplasty can improve your appearance and give you more confidence. It will not change your overall appearance or facial structure, but will give you a younger, fresher, rejuvenated look.

Will the Results of Eyelid Surgery Be Permanent?

Upper Eyelid Surgery can last five to seven years. Lower Eyelid Surgery may need to be revised as you age. Obviously, your eyes will continue to age naturally even after the procedure.

In the event that your upper eyelids start to droop more in time, a Brow Lift might be a better option moving forward.

How Should I Prepare for Eyelid Surgery?

You should find someone to drive you home after your medical procedure. You should also find someone to stay with you the night of your surgery.

Expect and plan to remain home from work and no exercise for a few days after the procedure while you heal. Some people have dry eyes after surgery, sometimes this can last for a prolonged period. If this condition continues past two weeks, talk to your physician.

At home, you should have the following prepared:

1. Ice cubes.

2. Ice pack (or you can use frozen vegetables in the bag).

3. Small cotton pads or dressings.

4. Eye drops, your physician will prescribe the correct type.

5. Clean washcloths and towels.

6. Over-the-counter painkillers, which your physician will prescribe.

How Is Eyelid Surgery Performed?

An Eye Lift typically takes around two hours if both upper and lower eyelids are done together. Your physician will likely use a local anesthesia combined with oral sedation.

If you are having the top and bottom eyelids done at the same time, your surgeon will deal with the tops first. Your surgeon will cut along the natural lines of your eyelids. By making these cuts, they can separate the loose skin from the other tissue and remove excess fat and skin. Next, they will close the incisions with small stitches. The stitches will remain for three to six days.

The procedure on the lower eyelids might be done using a few different methods. Your surgeon might makes a small incision in your lower eyelid to remove fat. That incision won't be noticeable. They might also use a laser to seal and smooth the skin.

Another strategy includes making a cut along the eyelash edge. Through that cut, your surgeon can remove excess skin, muscle, and fat. The cut line blurs over time.

After both of these techniques, laser therapy may be prescribed.

How Long Is The Recovery After Eyelid Surgery?

After Eyelid Surgery or Blepharoplasty, you will have stitches that will stay for up to seven days. You may have some swelling, your eyelids should be healing well and looking normal within two weeks.
