As we say a loud and heartfelt, "Adios!" to 2020 and hope for a sunnier 2021, sometimes it feels like we are wading through an endless quagmire of stress and strife. It's our job to find the gems of happiness amongst this mental muck. With all the "lemons" and "curveballs" that life has a tendency to throw at us, it takes a hearty soul to find that zest for life and the light at the end of the proverbial tunnel. Here are some time tested tips and tricks to increase your lust for life and up your energy!

1. Keep a written journal. Be descriptive and truthful. Recent studies have found a direct correlation between writing down your ideas, feelings and insights and discovering an appreciation for your life and increased feelings of positivity and fulfillment. Make a daily list of what you are grateful for. Record all your thoughts good and bad, only then can you fully process them.

2. Listen to music that you enjoy and reflects your mood. Science has shown that music stimulates the area of the brain that controls dopamine release. Happy music, happy mood. Music can also relax or energize you, it has even been shown to stimulate growth in plants!

3. Do one act of kindness each and every day. This can include giving compliments, helping a neighbor or even just writing a thank you note or smiling at a stranger.

4. Always question your negative thoughts and feelings. Challenge yourself to accept other ways of seeing things or how you respond to them. Consider different emotional outcomes. Positive thinking can improve your health and wellbeing, it can even improve your appearance and make you more successful.

5. Build your self confidence. It has been proven that confident people have a better overall disposition and they are more optimistic, less prone to admit defeat or quit in bad situations. They are able to better maintain a clear head and solve problems, including during a crisis. Rid yourself of the idea that you are a failure or will lose. Don't ever admit defeat and don't assume the worst case scenario. Positive mind power should never be undervalued.

6. Don't forget to Smile! It will make you and everyone around you feel more joyful. Your face says a lot about you to the world, show the world your inner beauty. Smile when you look in the mirror, your existence is living proof that you are special.

7. Follow your passions. Set goals and achieve them. Stay excited and engaged. Volunteer to help others, learn a new skill or study something that interests you. If you feel purposeful and involved, you will have a better, longer and more fulfilling life.

Try and meditate seven minutes each day and deeply contemplate your life. Self reflection has been shown to improve your temperament, reduce stress and improve your sleep and overall health. People who mediate daily are more centered, mindful and feel much more gratitude. You can start with just a few minutes each day.

Practice self respect and self-care

Don't let bad news or skepticism ruin your day. Remember the famous Charles R. Swindoll quote, "Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it." You control your mind and you can decided the outcome. You tell your mind and body how to feel. You have the power! Control your mind, control your life and your destiny!
